Let It Go

I’m surprised to be awake even though it is only 8:10 pm. We woke up at 1 am Phoenix time this morning to fly home from our vacation back East. Flying from the East to the West is great since you gain time. We left at 5:50 this morning from Providence, RI and got home at 10:15.

Needless to say, I am tired and will be heading to bed very shortly. The long flight, a seven hour drive across five states yesterday, and sleeping in strange beds are not the only reasons I am tired. In all honesty, my vacation was unhealthier than usual.

Sugar – My sugar intake was higher than usual. I enjoyed cupcakes at my nephew’s wedding. I enjoyed a muffin or croissant with breakfast several days. Yum!

Wheat/Gluten – I like to avoid gluten three or four days per week. I don’t do this because I have to; I do it because I choose to. (I also choose not to be completely gluten-free which is another topic.) I think I ate gluten daily on this trip.

Alcohol – One day specifically, I enjoyed some incredibly tasty liquid treats. We went to the Dogfish Head Brewery & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, DE. It came as a surprise to us that DFH also creates vodka, gin, and rum. I ended my visit at the pub with a PB-Tini, which combined their Peanut Butter Vodka and Chocolate Vodka. Yes, it was a liquid Reese’s in a martini glass and it was very tasty. I recommend this drink.

Vegetables – I certainly had my fill of seafood on this trip, and lacked in my typical vegetable intake. I use a greens powder on trips since I can’t juice, so that helps; however, it is not the same as my fresh juices and smoothies at home. Luckily, there was a restaurant in Rehoboth Beach (www.greenmanjuicebar.com) that makes juices and I enjoyed one as we headed out of town. It tasted so good!

Seafood – As I said, I got my fill of seafood on this trip. We went to Catcher’s two evenings in a row to enjoy oysters and sautéed calamari. We also enjoyed scallops and shrimp at Dos Locos. It was delivered on a 700 degree stone so the seafood cooked at our table. That was cool!

Exercise – As usual, I looked into yoga studios in the areas we were staying and had the class schedules with me. We managed to not do any yoga. We also skipped the gym that I looked into. We did walk quite a bit; however, that doesn’t make up for the lack of yoga or strength training I planned to do.

All that said, I am not perfect. I don’t try to be perfect. It is important to “let it go” sometimes. Yes, I planned to exercise more. I had to let it go knowing when I got back home I would get back into my routine. Yes, I ate and drank more unhealthy than usual. I had to let it go, again knowing I would get back into my routine at home.

I know I put a lot of pressure on myself since I am a recovering perfectionist. I believe all of us put too much pressure on ourselves these days and it is unhealthy. In speaking with a coaching client earlier today, we talked about a certain number she is striving to get to with her waist size. While she is trying numerous approaches to get to this number, we also talked about how she may end up needing to let it go. Who knows? In the end, letting it go may be what gets her where she desires to be.

Sometimes you start reading a book and you just can’t get through it…let it go.

Maybe you keep replaying a discussion you had with someone earlier in the day…let it go.

You want to eat a smooth and creamy piece of cheesecake to celebrate an achievement…enjoy it and let it go. Don’t hold onto any guilt. It serves no healthful purpose.

Is there something you have been trying to obtain that you need to move on from? If so, maybe now is the time to let it go.
